Athlete’s Feet

Athlete’s Foot is a fungal skin irritation called tinea pedis that affects the foot, especially on the sole and in between the toes. It is characterized by a red rash, extreme itching, and a very foul smell.

WHAT CAUSES ATHLETE’S FOOT?

  • Going barefoot in public places such as a locker room or public shower
  • Sharing a towel or shoes with someone who already has Athlete’s Foot
  • Wearing tight, closed-toe shoes that don’t allow air-flow
  • Sweaty feet

HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE ATHLETE’S FOOT?

  • Burning ?feet
  • Itching ?feet
  • Flaking, cracking, and split skin on the feet
  • Oozing or crusty blisters on the feet

  • Wear socks that wick away moisture such as cotton socks
  • Wear shoes in public places (e.g. pools, locker rooms, public showers etc.)
  • Keep your feet clean and dry. Athlete’s Foot likes warm, moist places.
  • Wear shoes that allow your feet to breathe. Shoes that hold in moisture are more likely to be a cause of Athlete’s Foot.
  • Use clean socks on a daily basis

WHAT TREATMENTS CAN I DO FROM HOME FOR ATHLETE’S FOOT?

Most cases of Athlete’s Foot can be treated at home with special creams, sprays, powders, and lotions.

WHEN SHOULD I SEE A DOCTOR FOR ATHLETE’S FOOT?

As soon as you think you have Athlete’s Foot. This type of infection spreads quickly and the longer you wait the harder it is to get rid of it.
